TRUMP by Alain Badiou

Enlightened minds like to mock Donald Trump. He is said to be the symbol of a form of political stupidity that is just waiting for people of goodwill to wake up and vanish like a bad dream. But nothing could be further from the truth. Rather than a symbol, Trump is a symptom: that of the gradual disappearance of politics in a gigantic process of unification, where the seemingly most hostile camps are actually holding hands. To put an end to Trump, it is this disappearance that must be combated, by restoring the possibilities of an opposition that resists the fundamental consensus of our time. This consensus has a name: democratic capitalism. Its opposition too: the idea of communism. The whole difficulty, therefore, lies in the way Trump and his ilk make it more impossible every day to make it effective—at the very moment when we need it most.
